Books that leave you in tears

Happy Tuesday Everyone 🙂 Today I thought I would try something a bit different and put the spotlight on books that have left me in tears over the years. Now fair warning it doesn’t exactly take much to get me blubbering, happy, sad, angry I’m really not picky. It’s basically a given that if I see anyone cry whether it be in my real life or on TV that you better hand me the tissues cos I will be bawling right their along with them. (This is particularly embarrassing when out at the movies, but hey at least it’s dark!) So as you can imagine any good, heart wrenching piece of writing tends to take over the rational part of my brain where I know it’s just a story and leaves me a sobbing mess. So here are my top five picks of books that have left me in tears.

Number 5

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold .

I first read the first chapter of this book while in high school, we were reading through The Lovely Bonesand studying the first chapters of books. I don’t really remember reading it in the classroom but I know I went out and bought the book shortly after so it must of got my attention. It was when I brought it home that the tears started. For anyone that hasn’t read the book it is told from the perspective of Susie Salmon a teenager who is raped and murdered on her way home from school, it follows the lives of her family and friends in the aftermath as well as her transition into the next life. Now this isn’t what I would call one of my favourite books, in fact I haven’t picked it up again since I first read it. I found after the first few chapters I did start get a bit bored with both the writing and the story. However it is the first book that I can remember that really got me emotionally invested and reaching for the tissues so it earns it spot here at number 5.

Number 4

The Fault in our stars – John Green

This is a book I received as a Christmas present a few years , and by that time there had The Fault in Our Starsbeen enough hype around the book that I at least knew what I was in for. It still took me a couple of months though before I managed to sit myself down and begin to read, and what one tearful mess it was. The Fault in our Stars follows terminal cancer patient Hazel and the effect of one meeting with Augustus Waters has on her life. The ending in the book was what really got me, although I had guessed how he was going to end it I still wished for more. This is still so far the only John Green book I have read, not because I hated the book but I think I have just not found another that has interested me enough to pick it up.

Number 3

Where Rainbows End – Cecelia Ahern

Now this book gets a special mention as it’s the only book in this list that had be crying because I was happy not sad. Not gonna lie it was a long read with a fair amount of angerWhere Rainbows End and disappointment before it got to that point but it got there nonetheless. The book follows best friends Alex and Rosie and their life journey from child to teen to adult and the connection they maintain as they end up living completely different lives. The only other book I had read from Cecelia Ahern when I picked this book up was P.S I love you, (a book which would of made the list if I had made this into a top ten list!) Although a completely different story it still had the same sort of writing style which I love, although this was quite a long read and did drag a bit it some places. Either way points for happy tears.

Number 2

Me without you – Kelly Rimmer

This is the most recent tear inducing read book that I have read and one that completely Me Without Youcaught me by surprise. You can read my review here. The book follows the love story of Lilah and Callum, two unlikely strangers who just so happen to be perfect for each other. It has been compared to books such as Me Before You by Jojo Moyes (a book currently on my TBR and from what I have heard could probably end up on this list). I think what got me with this book was that I was good way through the book before I realised how it was going to end and when I did my heart sank. The ending however is beautifully written and definitely makes up for it.

Number 1

My Sister’s Keeper – Jodi Picoult

This was another that initially completely took me by surprise. I first read this many years ago and had borrowed it from a friend who had offered no more then ‘read this’. It Image result for my sister's keeperwas also my very first Jodi Picoult book and so I really didn’t know what I was getting into. The book follows Anna, a child conceived for the sole purpose to be a bone marrow match for her sister Kate who is suffering from Cancer. It follows her as she begins to question who she really is and her decision which tears her family apart. All I can say though was I was not prepared for that ending! This is also the only book out of this list that I have reread, turns out even when I know what’s coming I still blubber like an idiot. (I’ve watched the movie as well, same result).

What are you most tear inducing reads? Happy or Sad I would love to know 🙂

  1. I agree with your comments on all these books. Sometimes books do drag, but then you get a great ending. The best in that list for would be Jodi Picoult, out of interest have u seen the film to that book, what were your thoughts on that. X

    1. Jodi Picoult is definitely a firm favorite for me, though I find I can only read one of her books at a time before I need to switch it up. Yes I have from what I remember I didn’t enjoy it as much as the book but was still worth the watch, I’m still undecided which ending I prefer though haha. How about you?

  2. I need to make lists like this. I never remember off the top of my head when asked. The first one that popped into my head was “The Book Thief”. Now I’m going to be chewing on it. 🙂

  3. I’ve done an ugly cry book post once and I think there was Bright Side, A Monster Calls and Forbidden on it. I read The Fault in Our Stars and My Sister’s Keeper too and although they were really moving, I didn’t cry, but I have to say that I don’t cry easily with books.

  4. I cried too reading The Lovely Bones and The Fault In Our Stars, so I know what you mean. Other books that got me crying were The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness and Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson.

    Nice post!

  5. Hi! Thank you so much for the follow by the way!

I completely agree with you about the fault in our stars and my sisters keeper. They make me tear up every time! Have you read A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness? That one is another tear jerker I definitely recommend it. The illustrations in the book are absolutely beautiful!

    1. Eleanor looks interesting I can see that getting to me quite quickly, I’m really going to have to read A Monster Calls sooner rather then later lol it seems to be the main tear inducing book for most people!

    1. The Book Thief is another one that has come up a lot, another for the tbr. I had completely forgotten about the Deathly Hallows! I know the first time I was reading that their was a fair amount of tears as well as going back and rereading what had happened as I couldn’t quite believe it.

  7. Magonia is one that had me crying throughout. I had just lost my grandmother and it just hit home.
She’s Come Undone is another that I just couldn’t stop the tears. Actually, Wally Lamb books are pretty much always tear jerkers.
    Me Before You (obbbbviously).

  8. I almost never (ever) cry over books or movies. There was one movie, “McFarland” which had me going but I live not far away and it got real for me- also based on the true story. The one book which affected me like that is “The Buddha in the Attic ” by Julie Osaga and guess what – that’s also based on historical events and happened in the local towns. My town is not mentioned but many others are – I’m very familiar with the towns and I knew some of the people it all really happened to. This is when the Japanese people were forced into internment camps in California. When the story started naming the very real towns I just burst into tears. Also, it was told in 2nd person so it made it very real – “We saw the signs and went from the fields to our homes where we packed. We showed up at the railway station at the time specified. We came from Lemoncove and Tulare and Pixley.” – It goes on (that’s totally paraphrased).

    1. I have never read a book based in or around my hometown or from where I live now, I really should look into it. I’m not sure if I would be able to read something where I knew the people that it had happened to though or at least I don’t think I can imagine the affect that would have on me

  9. I definitely know what you mean about The Fault in Our Stars! I picked it up and literally stayed up all night reading it. I couldn’t stop crying! I always cry at the end of a series, when you know you’re saying good-bye to a beloved character.

Thanks for following my blog, by the way! I really like yours!

  10. What a great idea for a post! I’m a huge crier at books, or movies and commercials even, so it doesn’t take much to set me off! I’ve read everything on your list except Me Without You, so I’ll have to read that! But everything you listed made me tear up or bawl my eyes out! I can’t read anything by Jodi Picoult without crying. I read Small Great Things last fall, and it tore me up! You definitely need to read Me Before You; I was sobbing! I’ve read a couple other of Jojo Moyes books that left me in tears too, so I’m beginning to think that’s her writing style. My 14-year-old dog died right before Thanksgiving, so I’m not sure if I was trying to torture myself or what, but Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley was a very different kind of book but it was great. Although I had to read it when everyone was asleep because I cried so much. If you love dogs and don’t mind a very, very quirky book (or crying), it’s a good read!

    1. I will have to check that out it looks interesting and at this point I’ve accepted I will probably cry at things so its okay haha, I have read some other Jojo Moyes so I have no doubt that she will be able to set me off on a tear fest with Me Before You, and same with Small Great Things! That’s definitely one I will be rereading

  11. No, I’ve definitely learned over the years that there is nothing wrong with crying over a good book! I’d love to see Small Great Things made into a movie…wow, that would be a tearjerker!! I know the movie version of Me Before You had me crying too…it’s just inevitable that if it’s slightly sad that I’m going to cry! I’ve been reading nothing but suspense and mystery lately maybe I need to find a good tear jerker 🙂

  12. I never cry to books, but it have happend once and it was when I read the book written by some of the kids surviving the shooting at Utoya in Norway. While reading it you could really feel exactly the fear they where feeling when it happend. And THAT really hurt, it was so vivid. It felt like you where there with them. That you WHERE them. And THAT broke my heart.

  13. A Thousand Boy Kisses by Tillie Coleman (partial to the audiobook – full disclosure 😉 and The Art of Racing in the Rain. I cried so much reading the first chapter that I had to flip to the end of the book (which I never do) to find out what happens. Then I held my dog and cried for a really long time.

  14. I have seen the movie of Lovely Bones, I have not read the book. I did not cry with the movie maybe I’m too insensitive when it comes to the movies. I will put the book on my TBR! I balled my eyes out on The Fault in Our Stars but once again I did not read it I saw the movie and I want to read the book. I do want to read and see Me Without You.

Thanks for the list! You have added more to my ever growing TBR! UGH!

  15. Great post! A few books have made me cry, The Giver did. Even though that book is thought of as young adult, it does deal with sad and a little mature subject matter. It’s one of my favorite series. I teared up when I finished reading A Monster Calls, also a sad and tough book to read, the movie had the same effect on me. I have read The Lovely Bones, (sad and haunting book, I liked it though) and The Fault in Our Stars, which was a great book!

  16. I cry while I read books ALL THE TIME!!! Some of the ones on my list:
The Five Stages of Falling in Love by Rachel Higginson
The Song of David by Amy Harmon
The Summer Remains by Seth King
Heart-Shaped Hack by Tracey Garvis-Graves (but also made me laugh so hard my husband came upstairs)
The Day He Went Away by Jennifer Millikin

There’s a lot more, but those are the ones that came to mind first!

  17. The only book on your list that I have read so far is The Lovely Bones. I brought it after I saw horrible, vile reviews on Goodreads and I can not thank those people enough…they brought a book to my attention that moved me and for that I am thankful.
